Film Journal | Sumatra's Last Tiger (2010)

Introduction and Story Line

Sumatra's Last Tiger is a documentary film released in 2010. Its director is Harun Rahman and the story background is located in Tambling, Indonesia. (Pulfer, 2019)

The film shows the Sumatra conservation area which also the territory for the Sumatra tiger. It shows the disadvantages of humans illegal activities that cause the extinction of Sumatra tiger. The Sumatra tiger's conservation activities and its difficulties were demonstrated in this film.

Mode of Documentary

Poetic

A poetic documentary mode is implemented in this documentary film. In the plot development, the voice-over mentions the tiger is overcoming the food shortage problem and tries to attack humans since the poachers have hunted most of the animals in Tambling, Indonesia. Besides, the illegal logging activities causes Sumatras tiger to lose their territory and approach the village in Tumbling. A blurry and linear scene is shown to act as the vision of a starved tiger that perceives humans as its prey. This blurry effect and tense background music will bring tension to the audiences.

Expository

This film has applied an expository mode in most of the scene. It is because the voice of God is implemented throughout the film to interpret the important contents to the audiences. The most prominent scene that applies expository mode is the interpretation of the Sumatras tiger's extinction. In these scenes, filmmakers implement the scenes of logging, terrace, palm oil, and coffee. The voice-over is the main approaches to convey the main contents while the scenes will provide the evidence.

Observational

An observational mode is a vital technique in the scene that the Tambling security team expose a trap and try to remove it. In this scene, the security team members show the theory of the trap, the way to remove it, and the authority action after exposed the trap set up by the poaches. Through the action and conversation between the characters, audiences can receive the important message in a different approach except for the voice-over.

Performative

Performative mode is presented in the part that Marizal, the tiger keeper express his feeling after the authority decided to release the tigers which are suitable to survive in the wild region. Marizal feels gloomy and fearful due to the release of the tiger since he has a close relationship with the tigers. He feels fear is because he does not know the survival ability of the released tigers. By the way, Marizal is the only one who feels sad due to the release of the tiger.

Rhetorical Form

Argument from source

In this film, many experts appear and provide important information based on the issue of Sumatras tiger's extinction, conservation, medical and the protection of Tambling's flora and fauna. For the Sumatra tiger's extinction, Dr Robert Pickles is the expert on this issue. The director of Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation is Tomy Winata. The medical expert of the wild animals is Dr Bongot Huaso Mulia works as a veterinarian in Taman Safari Indonesia. Icuk Jo Laksito is the director of Security Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation, in charge of protecting the natural environment of Tambling.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, this film is a model of documentary film since it almost includes all the documentary mode, namely poetic, expository, and observative mode. After watching this film, my knowledge of the principle of wildlife animals and the circumstances of Sumatras Tiger are deeper and clearer. The approach of administering anaesthetics on the tiger makes me feel surprised as they easily fix the tiger in a small space to refrain from the danger.
